For a decade, BRTKC has served as a vital cultural institution that amplifies Black voices, preserves our stories, and provides access to transformative theatrical experiences for communities across the greater Kansas City area.

Today, we face an urgent and unexpected challenge.

Recent government decisions to decrease arts funding have significantly reduced the support we rely on for operation. While funding has not been eliminated entirely, the decrease is substantial, resulting in the loss of critical financial support and creating a serious financial gap that puts our day-to-day operations at risk. The federal government has proposed reducing National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) funding to $135M, a 35% decrease from $207M which is expected to result in approximately a 40% reduction in state arts funding. For organizations like ours, this means fewer resources for the essential expenses that keep our doors open.

This loss threatens not only our operations but also our ability to continue fulfilling our mission.

Why We’re Asking for Your Support

The funding that has been reduced did not support optional programming, it was core operating support that sustained the essential functions of our organization, including :

  • Rent and utilities for rehearsal and performance space

  • Staff and artist stipends

  • Production costs for upcoming shows

  • Community outreach and educational programming

  • Administrative and compliance costs required to operate as a nonprofit

Without immediate support, these essential functions are at risk.

Why BRTKC Matters

BRTKC is more than a theater company. We are:

  • A platform for Black playwrights, actors, directors, and designers

  • A steward of Black stories, history, and lived experiences

  • A creative home for artists who are too often underfunded and overlooked

  • A space that fosters dialogue, education, and healing through the arts

When arts funding declines, it disproportionately impacts organizations like ours. Those rooted in community, culture, and purpose rather than in profit.

How Your Support Makes a Difference

Every contribution, no matter the size, has a meaningful impact. Your support helps us:

  • Sustain daily operations

  • Retain dedicated staff and artists

  • Honor our current programming commitments

  • Continue serving Kansas City with high-quality, culturally relevant theater

Your donation is an investment in storytelling, community access to the arts, and the survival of an institution that exists to serve, inspire and uplift.

Standing Together

The arts are essential and should not be a casualty of political decisions. They deserve to endure. With your support, BRTKC can navigate this challenging moment and continue creating space for stories that must be told.

We invite you to contribute, share, and stand with us. Together, we can ensure that the curtain does not close on BRTKC.

Thank you for your continued support.
